Dr. Fernando Valenzuela studied medicine at the University of Chile and obtained the award for best student of the generation, achieving honorary residency in dermatology in 2006. During his residency, he went to Canada and spent time under Dr. Kim Papp who specializes in psoriasis and clinical trials. He then made stays at the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Spain and the Charité Hospital in Germany. Back in Chile, he founded CIEC (Centro Internacional de Estudios Clínicos), and has been the Medical Director since conception.
He is currently Associate Professor of Dermatology and Head of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Chile. Dr. Valenzuela is also in charge of hospitalized patients with skin conditions in Hospital Clínico University of Chile, and teaches medical students and residents regarding psoriasis and other papulosquamous disorders. He is very active in congresses and clinical trials, working as an investigator in areas such as: psoriasis (adolescents and adults), psoriatic arthritis, chronic spontaneous urticaria, genital warts, atopic dermatitis and alopecia areata.
Dr. Valenzuela is Councilor of the International Psoriasis Council, an International Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and an International Member of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. He is also a member of the CILAD – Colegio Ibero-Latinoamericano de Dermatologia (Latin American College of Dermatology). He has published more than 30 international papers, 1 students’ book in dermatology, 4 chapters in national books, and is the lead author of the Chilean clinical guidelines for the management of psoriasis.
